Give him something intangible that is thoughtful but requires effort:
Pack a picnic. Take along an activity, either standard (kites or frisbee) or world of the wacky (bubble blowing stuff, especially the monster bubbles or the cascades of bubbles).
Tell him you are taking him to a very exclusive place. Don't neccessarily dress very formally but wear nicer than jeans. Take the picnic idea and build on it. Enlist the help of friends to be the waiters. (You can return the favor on their special occasion.) Have them set up a table (tablecloth, china, etc.) outdoors somewhere in a beautiful location. Have a full service meal, outdoors, ending with the birthday candles in his favorite dessert.
Make a donation in his name to an organization or cause that is important to him.
Schedule a massage for him. Discreetly find out if he wants a woman or a man therapist. Some men are funny about other men touching them (this is my field.)
Design a treasure hunt through the house, ending with a terrific dessert and the movie (or sports event) he has always wanted to watch and that you never wanted to (unless it is something that is offensive to your moral code). Be enthusiastic about it.
Take his car to be professionally washed and detailed. (Or have the company come to his house or workplace.)
We only eat Haribo brand gummi bears and I prefer the clear ones that taste like pineapple. For our wedding anniversary my husband bought ten bags of gummis and went through each bag, pulling out the clear ones for me. He packed them in plastic wrap and presented them in a mug as part of my present. It was great.
He has also custom burned CDs for me before with music he knew I would like but didn't neccessarily have.
Perhaps one of the above will bring to mind the perfect present for him. Good luck.

That is not stupid at all!!! After a year he should definitely get you something since it's a big achievement. Valentines day should be special very year and should do something for you every year. Just hang in there if you really want to stay with him, remember why you low him and stick to your decision. If not you can always find someone else that in sure will treat you wayyyyy better. None is worth your tears, and the only one that is, won't make you cry. <3 I hope I helped :)
