I'm not familiar with Ample Notice, but I've been pretty satisfied with one called Kirby Alarm and Task Scheduler. You can get information here:

It will pop up a note, run a program, sound an alarm, or send an e-mail at intervals you specify. It's pretty flexible, and does almost everything I need a reminder program to do. There is a free version (which I use) and a pro version. Over six hundred users at download.com (see below) have rated it highly, giving it an amazing *average* rating of 5 stars out of 5. The editor's rating is good, too. Tucows.com is a tad less enthusiastic, giving it 3 of 5 "cows."
