as a means of explaining the unknown, bringing groups of people together, and to keep the peace?

I thought people would be bright enough to assume this based on the question - Hypothetically, there is no God AND human life on earth exists (via some non-devine means, such as evolution).

Wow, I'm floored by people's inability to think hypothetically and think outside of their existing beliefs.
I guess I gave people too much credit...

People have always done that -- always projected any issues with respect to fears of death, of the unknown, of the unexplainable, of desires for justice, etc. outward and onto a deity. Unfortunately, they've projected much of our ego thought system outward and it's why we have hell, guilt, sin, punishment, the saved versus the unsaved, the chosen people, etc. -- all separation mechanisms that lead to people coming apart. In the Parable of the Prodigal Son, Jesus tries to get across how much we engage in defining god and how we resist the Real God and the concept of Unconditional Love (concentrate on the 'good' son).
That said, beyond these concepts is the Something that can be experienced, as long as we experience it directly and not get sidetracked into thinking that our projections are god.

There's no way to tell.
Hypothetically, if God did not exist, then I see no reasons at all for humans to invent such an entity that was so insanely more powerful than themselves.
Consider other animals. Is there any evidence at all that THEY have a concept of God? I imagine that IF God did not exist, then we would live and behave more or less like they do. Which explains perfectly why many atheists behave like animals.
Also, speaking for Christianity, if Jesus was not who He says he is, then humans certainly would NOT have invented a religion in which they could not reach heaven of their own accord. This is another reason why Christianity is unique among religions of the world. It's the only one where man cannot reach heaven based on his own works. This lends to Christianity's authenticity.

Yes. Man would invent a god and religion. Some might even invent such silly things as virgin birth, an ark full of animals and many other absurd things.

If hypothetically, there was no God. Then hypothetically there would be no humans. And hypothetically, nothing would exist, which means, hypothetically, there wouldn't be anything to talk about and Yahoo wouldn't exist. But all that is just hypothetically

God created man to worship. The need is there.
So, if one does not have the one true faith of religion, he's going to worship something anyway.
It may be humanism, atheism, money, or materialism.
Also, he'll be in other religions serving other gods one way or the other.
I'm still looking for the scripture that says God created man to worship Him. Man was created for additional reasons, of course.

I don't think that we would. The natural state of mankind is sinful from our birth. Why would we as humans who are born sinful, want to create a god that would bring our flesh under submission with rules and regulations if there was no god? It would be pointless, for we receive our notion of morales from his word and without his word we have no basis inwhich to create our laws that are in place in our society. But there is a God, and it is because of our fallen state that we have to be reconciled back to him thru the blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. It's because there is a God in heaven that we have the need of rules and regulations to follow. It's because of him that we live.

Humans created all gods for a way to explain the things in the world that they could not.

yes, humans invented god because our brain has a tendency towards gestalt, to seeing patterns where there are none, to complete the picture. we like to make up stories about what we see to make it all make sense.
in terms of social control, like in getting a bunch of folk across the desert, it's the ultimate authority figure. god said it, move along!
