Run the Symantec Security Check http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/home_homeoffice/virus_startcheck.html <-- a free tool offered from symantec to scan for viruses on-line that may prevent the proper installation of your anti-virus software. Then download, install, run, updated, and scan using spybot S&D and ad-aware personal edition http://www.filehippo.com/download_spybot_search_destroy http://www.filehippo.com/download_ad-aware After all that, then install your new antivirus software assuming that your system should be pretty clean before starting.
