I'm a dog breeder and have always been able to rely on temperature drop to determine whelp; however, this time her temp has been below 100* for five days now and she is showing no signs of labor - is this normal? - has anyone else ever experienced this? - should I call my vet?

Ok, Her temp has been low since I have been checking it - not just a sudden drop and it stayed there. I'm wondering if the problem could be the temp in my house - we keep it really cool in here right now because my daughter has asthma and it is hard for her to breathe. I have not witnessed a drop - this is a steady temp.

How many times a day do you check her temp? I only ask, because I just went through this with my female last week. One time of day, it would drop to 99.2, then another time of day, it would jump back up to 100.6 or so. If I were only taking temps once a day, I would have only seen the 99.2.

I've never seen this in my females before this time, and it was rather startling, I admit. Especially since she went past her "due date". However, after much communication with two diferent vets, it was determined that this was just how it was going to go this time. She gave birth naturally to two healthy puppies yesterday afternoon. Her temp never did stabilize completely until the last 12 hours or so, I would say. It started to fluctuate about a week before birth. (Talk about getting no sleep!)

It would be a good idea to call the vet and discuss it with them, and let them know what all of the factors are, just in case.

Best of luck to you!

I am a breeder also, and while I have had dogs go past what "I thought" was their due dates I have never had a drop in temp more than 24 hours before birth.
I would have freaked out after the first 18 hours.
I would suggest call the vet "NOW"

First off i don't think 90% of the individuals would believe who he's or used to be, and would no longer deal with what he needed to say. That is if he got here in human form. The final God, could now not get all the people to take heed to him. For most of them didn't care what he had to say. Sorry. Take care dave

The temperature drop is usually just a brief dip and you could miss it. Some dogs temperatures can be higher or lover than is the normal and it sounds like that is her baseline temp.

What day is it from the first breeding?

My friend's dog was like that. She called the vet after a couple of days though. I would highly reccomend that you call the vet.

You should call now. I know it is the week end, but your vet would rather hear from you now than at midnight.
