Are you wanting an auto pistol or a semi-auto pistol? If your wanting a Semi-auto most incarnation of the 1911 are worth the money (I have heard some bad things about Kimber though)
If I were going to get combat tupperware I would get the Springfield Armory XD 45

I'm going to assume you mean semi-auto. Full auto handguns are very hard, if not impossible to own and very expensive.
What are you looking for in a gun? Target shooting? Self-defense? History? How big are your hands? Are you going to carry it? In my experience anything by a good manufacturer will be reliable if properly mantained. And for the most part accuracy is more a function of your technique and skill than the gun, provided the sights are properly aligned.
For a time-tested design with historical appeal, a mill-spec or GI-spec Springfield 1911 is a good choice. A good carry gun would be a Springfield XD or any glock

.45 ACP Model 1911 Double Stack from Smith and Wesson should do the trick.

New Springfield Armory XD45 is awesome. Any of the main companies - Sig, Glock, Kimber, HK, etc. - are good, but the XD fits the average hand well and holds 14 rounds. Also, they usually come with 3 mags and a holster.

Springfield Armory makes a good, reasonably priced copy of the model 1911.

Look into the HK 45 compact tactical. One of my favorites.

All of the brands mentioned are good. Handle and shoot as many as you can before you buy. If it doesn't feel good in you're hand then it probably won't feel comfortable to fire.
