i would say a labrador retriever, golden retriever, newfooundland, or saint bernhard. i have 2 retrievers and they are VERY great tempered dogs and i have two kids and they do not mind the kids pulling and lcimbing on them at ALL. GOOD LUCK!!
p.s: even if people tell you to get a little dog DO NOT LISTEN!! i have a chihuaha also and have grown up with toy breeds and the are very yappy nippy dogs and get angry easily!!

How can you really know? You know the personality of your child. I would take him to the pet store and let him look around. I wish I could say 'most boys like...", but I can't. Boys and their dogs are truly a couple that can be difficult to determine. When I see a little boy - I picture a Golden Retriever or a Lab, Cocker Spaniel (but they can be spastic at times). Irish Setter, Collie...much of this depends on 1- how much room you have 2) outdoor or indoor 3) does your child relate to animals - in other words- will he love the pet rather than antagonize it 4) training 5) will he be responsible for its upkeep (feeding, etc.) There are a lot of things to consider. A dog can be a wonderful pet for a young child - but only if the parents have done their homework and know their own child. You can get a pet for a child and he is not ready for the pet. 5 is rather young, but depending on your child, might be the perfect age - especially if he has expressed a 'sincere' interest in wanting one. Please do your homework first. Go to the pet store - see how your son reacts. Go several times before you make a decision. Go on line - check out websites and sites where professional dog trainers can advise you about compatability with a young child and a dog. The one I have given has a lot of information, but just key "kid friendly dogs" and you will get a plethora of information. Good luck to you and your son on your choice. Let us know.

You'll want a large, strong, even-temperred dog that can take the kind of mauling a young boy would probably give him. Labs or lab-mixes are generally good. And my grandparents' Saint Bernard was always good about playing with and watching out for us kids.

How much room do you have?
Little space = little dog
Big space = any dog
Short hair dogs are easier to groom.
I got my last 2 dogs at the shelter, mixed breeds it is true of puppies big feet will be a big dog, I picked a labX pup that had huge front feet, 140 lbs later they fit him fine. My shepherd X is alert and a very good watch dog,Both are very friendly.

Golden Retrievers are great dogs, and most of the time you can teach them commands easily so they wont jump on little kids. Although, they do shed. Yellow Labs are also good dogs for little kids, and don't shed as much.

My first choice would be a labrador and second a collie.. These dogs are so nice.. so great not only around grown ups but also children.. they can sometimes be very protective of the children so keep that in mind.

a small breed i would suggest a jack Russel. mine loves little kids. when you choose your dog you have to remember the way they act depends on how you treat them. they are just like people if you love them they will love you back. so i guess the answer to tour question is find a decent breed and remember to treat it the way you want it to be to you. also keep in mind most dogs are smarter than humans.
