It cannot be from any specific aim or point. But it can be out of respect and love that person had while he was alive. Flowers is the sign of a good will, love, respect etc. etc. I don't think it means anything more than that.

The flower covering is to signify the spirit soul leaving the material body and entering into transcendence.

i would say that it would be to cover up the smell of decaying flesh.
