It would be difficult to bomb Lebanon gently, if that is what you are suggesting.
Lebanon gave Israel a huge "in" when it started firing missiles into Israel from Beirut and the surrounding area. It was kind of a mandatory invitation to Beirut; a come-here-or-die invitation to the city.
Lebanon's Hezbollah or whoever is calling the "shots" there killed a lot of people on a whim, and they started it. Not Israel. Check the facts and the recent history of the city, the area, the border, the two nations, the peace agreement, and the standing orders form the U.N.
The whole reason countries have militarize is when someone in another country starts firing missiles at them, they can march/fly/swim/ride across that border and make them stop. It is called national defense or defense department for a reason.
Now in the case of Hezbollah, they cannot call themselves a defense department since it was an offensive attack.
So far Hezbollah has succeeded in brutally killing two very young Muslim boys in Nazareth, wrecked an Israeli apartment building where elderly people and their Filipino caregivers lived, killed the driver of a car that was hit by shrapnel from a missile, killed a young mother while she sat sipping her coffee on her balcony, killed a two year old girl. Those anecdotes are just a fraction of the roll calls of the dead the well-armed terrorists have carried out.
Furthermore, these are basically things Hezbollah's attacks did before Israel struck back at Beirut. It is hard to figure out what they were in "retaliation" for, since Israel had completely pulled out of Lebanon five years ago.
It is also difficult to see the legality of Hezbollah even possessing the weapons - missiles, of all things.
a.) Hezbollah is a terrorist organization
b.) Hezbollah was ordered to disarm itself by the U.N. five years ago when Israel left Beirut
Even you must admit that putting thousands of missiles in a crowded modern city along a national border, and firing missiles into another country is crazy & an act of war.
Is every single action justified, taken out of context, picked apart with 20-20 hindsight using a lot more knowledge than was known at the time a decision was made or an accident occurred? Who knows, really.
But is any action of Hezbollah, the guys starting the war, killing people in Israel justified. To turn your question around, "does Lebanon have the right to bomb Israel so brutally?"
And if not, then why did they do it?
Everyone knows the military conflict is a tragedy for both countries.
The head of Hezbollah's terrorist arm - well one of their "arms" anyway - seems to be crowing about the results of his "surprise" attack on Israel. He just promissed more "surprises" within the past couple days, in fact.
It seems like, more than anyone else, Hezbollah are the most unaffected by the stream of misery flowing both ways across the border.
It is curious you do not mention the brutality of Hezbollah in actually _starting_ a *war* between Lebanon and Israel.
Now some displomats will have to stop it, some politicians will have to try to strive all the harder to protect innocent lives from non-innocent-lives, and some military heroes will die trying to protect civilian lives.
I do not think you will find a lot of Hezbollah militant-terrorists fitting into one of these 3 categories.
If you want to ask questions, ask questions about Hezbollah.
Right now, the whole middle east is looking like fish in a barrel - shooting each other.
It is tragic. And it is important not to blame the victim. Look at who is behind the violence, not who is buried by it.
In order to disarm Hezbollah's "army", Israel has to seperate them from their missiles - or, if the terrorists are uncooperative, separate the civilians from the terrorists. Then when the civies have left the city and the terrorists are alone with their missiles - there are practical ways of dealing with the terrorists & missiles. They can either surrender, or not.
By esconsing themselves within a civilian population, and launching wave after wave of military attacks on a neighboring country, Hezbollah deserves the scrutiny that you are giving Israel.

Most people in the world would agree that Israel had a right to defend itself from the rocket attacks launched by Hezbollah.
Most people in the world would also agree that Israel "appears to be pursuing wider goals in the region", as Putin observed.
Most people believe that bombing the highly populated capital city Beirut has very little to do with defending Israel from Hezbollah's rockets - Beirut is much too far away for rockets to be launched, and all Hezbollah's forces are in the south of Lebanon near the Israeli border.
Whether they have the 'right' to 'bomb so brutally' or not, they certainly have the ability, and no country appears to be stopping them.

Yes.
Lebanon's 'sovereign' government was pressured for years to deal with the terrorists within their borders and they did nothing. Now Israel wants to once and for all get rid of these threats and do the dirty job that the Lebanon government doesn't want to do.
If the Lebanon government was the one executing these terrorists, it would be a whole different story...And don't tell me to try being a person in the Lebanese government trying to get the terrorist out. The lebanese government and Hezbollah share one thing in common: anti-Israel.

Hezbollah is viewed as a "terrorist" oranization to only one country, the United States/Israel. If Israel does what it does, the US/Israel calls it "self defense"; if Hezbollah or the Palestinians do the same thing then the US/Israel calls it "terrorism".
The hypocrisy of the US/Israel is so thick it just reeks.
Israel is doing what it is doing because it wants to wipe the Arabs off the face of the earth, which is ok for them, but to the US/Israel it is not ok for the Arabs to want the same thing from their perspective. More US/Israel hypocrisy.

Yes, Lebanon harbors terrorists. I am sorry for the civilians involved since obviously not all of them are terrorists, but people must put pressure on their governments not to allow terrorists in the country. Maybe then it will be easier.
If we place sanctions against a country because of terrorism then people can leave that country. No, it is not nice, in fact it is down right mean, but there is no other way to deal with irrational people.

Why don't you complain when Israel gets bombed by all those homicide bombers?
Is it only okay when Israeli civilians get killed?
