"Mentally retarded" is a medical diagnosis, often required to obtain appropriate therapies and benefits for children/adults who are developmentally disabled. Using the word "retarded" to refer to my child, who has Down syndrome, is not something I would do because unfortunately, the connotation of the word seems to imply stupidity. My child is not stupid, it simply requires more time for his to acquire certain skills. Having said that though, I don't label my son...he is simply my child... he has blond hair, blue eyes and an extra chromosome...but more than anything, he is my child and I love him with all my heart.

Spirituality and politics being so diplomatically blended ? ! Well, nice usage , that 'spiritually political'.........
Spirituality is about going beyond nature, not even 'bypassing' it. So, spiritual people (genuine ones) , should be more 'adaptable' !
Politics keeps on recommending 'new' looking words after mutilating the normally understood words, by assigning an 'ugly' meaning to it(using its political clout and popularity, yet again for political gains of cheap popularity and to make its presence felt for survival!). Spirituality humbly bows to the wishes of 'masses' and obliges by using the words in the sense it is 'now' understood.... So we may easily adapt to 'mentally or psychologically challenged', instead of 'retarded', though everyone knows what we are referring to !

Usually not. Although this used to be a medically-correct term (and may still be, technically), colloquial usage has turned it into an insult now so it does not seem proper to use it. If you want to refer to someone who is medically "retarded," it is much better to say "mentally handicapped" or "mentally challenged" or even state the medical condition such as Down's Syndrome etc. But if you do use the word in a way that is obviously not an attempt to be offensive, I think it may be alright, but people do find it offensive so beware.

Retarded is derogatory. If you say it when the child is "not" mentally challenged, then you should consider some parenting classes. If the child is mentally challenged...There are better ways to express the handicap.

if he/she is medically diagnosed to be retarded, I would only say that when necessary... otherwise, most definetly NOT! if the child has no disability, that's considered verbal abuse.
