And most of the white residents of this Arkansas town got angry. Even the state's Republican governor got angry. You want to tell me why?

I already know the story. I just want to see where prejudice and human concern applies in your answers.

I'LL GIVE YOU A CLUE: THE PEOPLE OF ARKADELPHIA DIDN'T WANT THESE PEOPLE EITHER ARRESTED OR DEPARTED.

Thank you for the link.

It appears that the immigrants in question weren't migrant workers traveling from place to place chasing seasonal work. These were members of a close-knit community that came to know each other as human beings rather than by race or immigration status.

In many communities, this is not the case. In some places the immigrants are migrant workers and don't spend enough time in any one place to become part of the community. In other areas, the immigrant population is largely segregated from other people in the community for a number of factors including financial status.

Without further research, I have to make a quick guess here, but I would say that the American citizens of Arkadelphia mostly fell in a similar financial bracket as the immigrants and they were all more likely to be neighbors than in areas where immigrants are the bulk of the poverty stricken. I expect the immigrants and American citizens in Arkadelphia were working similar jobs and earned similar incomes.

When you get to know somebody, they become human. These immigrants became human to the other residents of this town. The other residents didn't see low class strangers causing trouble, but actual people with feelings and families who were just after the same goals as themselves. Many probably hadn't even been aware of the immigrants' illegal status.

That is why they cared and that is why they were angry. Things were working fine as they were and that was disrupted.

Well, I don't know the story, but I know a few months ago there was a raid in Indianapolis, and the problem that everybody had with that was that the people being arrested and deported weren't even given a phone call. Some of them had kids at school to be picked up, etc, families were split up, and separated, some of them not knowing for days what had happened to their other family members. Ok, the law is being applied, but it doesn't matter what color a person is... do you want your family split like that?

I haven't heard the story and I used to live there - wish you had included a link - as to why would they have got upset - it took out their workforce and now who's going to do it? They were probably migrant workers as Hope has one of the largest migrant mission centers for migrant workers to stay in until the next crop is ready to harvest. (It's just down the road a bit.)

the bottom line is, we will always have illegal immigration because we will always company's like Tyson's who pay enough to Mexican officials that they can drive cargo buses down, fill them up, drive them back up here and put the people to work - they've already made it very clear to politicians that they need on average 40 million "illegal" immigrants a year or they would lose so much revenue due to "Americans and their demands for benefits" that they could not keep their doors open. I have a hard time swallowing that, but you know it got our politicians to put the immigration issue on hold for a year - so I guess we'll all choke it down. I'd gladly take a job at Tyson's, but they won't hire me - I'm not bi-lingual and have no desire to be, as I was born in America and we speak English. If I wanted to learn a second language it would be German, as that is my heritage or it would be Cherokee as that is my heritage. However, if I'm to read the labels in my own hometown grocery store, I'm going to have to learn Spanish or I'll have no clue what I'm buying. Does that make me racist? No, it just makes me mad that 100 years ago, people came to this country and died to learn English and make it their homeland - so why do we who have known no other homeland and desire no other homeland have to give up what has constitutionally been granted us to appease people who do not even want this to be their homeland?

But ...these people knew they were breaking the law ... they knew what the consequences would be if they were caught ... I know it's not the same thing, but there have been people sitting on death row who have been totally reformed, and still the penalty is being carried out ... there are sad stories to be told, but none of this would have happened if the law hadn't been broken in the first place ....

Finally, the LAW is being applied.

No prejudice, just enforcing an existing law that too many people ignore!

Those losers knew what they were doing. I could care less what happens to them. They don't belong here. I wish more Mexicans would be deported every day. I'm glad this happened.

I read that already. They identify with their local criminals, so they don't understand why people who break our laws are punished. Thank goodness the feds didn't say anything.

As JD says, put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Arkadelphia... Arkansas I'm assuming. I don't know another.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess if it's because the white's were employing them in their agriculture fields...Including the governor?

Not surprised. Bush is defending the illegals.. prolly cus he's having an affair with the illegal maid of his.. and cook.. and God know's who else...

The Gardner perhaps?

That was my original answer Dr.
Thank you for taking the time to mail me..
My answer below is ...well my new answer after reading your link.
---------------------------------

I can understand how the community felt as if they were missing a piece of themselves. I can't say that I'd not feel the same.

However, I don't agree with it. 119 is not too many compared to what the media has delivered, 12 million. But then again, I have a very strong feeling-- as I am well aquainted with the govt. for downsizing their statistics, that the 12 million is up around 40 to 60 million.

Of course I have no proof of this, other than personal experience, but I wouldn't put it past them. The fact is that if I were to have been subject to that type of environment, I might feel as if my community was violated..

Violated...for what though? Thats the discussion. For being illegal. If there is 119 illegals in and out of every other city, like here in Houston, which is a sanctuary for them, it adds up. And when it adds up, it cost millions and millions.. and sooner or later, billions of tax dollars earned and spent by those of LEGAL citizenship.

That's the problem.. The money figure. Another problem is the population in the country. This is going to end up another 3rd world country because of this quote. Why? Because the govt. will not be allowed to distribute this nations services any longer. The services provided are that of built around LEGAL citizens.. if need be. Not illegal undocumented beings!

The government is trying to dig their way out of this hole they've created, by making everyone happy! Which cannot be done! Our U.S. Constitution has been violated by our very own politicians! What needs to be done, is to take the innitiative of accepting their mistake and carrying out the laws; enforcing them and listening to their people; citizens of the country!

By them denying responsability and taking matters under their oath as to defend this country internally by the U.S. Constitution, that alone is greatly unacceptable! If we have charged and are working up trials for all those who have been deemed guilty of a fraudulent practice, these politicians I believe deserve the same punishment!

America just needs to wake up and realize that there is a problem... And though many have accepted this, congress seems to be trailing. I understand it's a long process, but they are twindling in and out of laws, trying to beat their own system by consciouslly pushing through a document that has not been completely and thoroughly accounted for.

Which isn't going to work.. simply because their under the impression that "we need to get this done and out of the way so we can move on with other agendas'!" NO!! NO!! YOU NEED TO GET THIS DONE PROPERLY and adjust this to fit the standards of this country! If Mr. Bush is preaching on and on about terrorism, and how we need to defend our land accordingly to protect it and it's citizens, than we need to go thru this completely-- 110%!! We need to do this for us.. and our country!! For our citizens! Simply because money plays out a simple alternative is moot.. But our politicians can't seem to grasp that knowledge! We don't have an alternative Mr. President! The fact is we commited a wrong-doing in the first place! We are not following our OWN LAWS!! We need to send these people home.. We need to build a border, we need to go through our systems of services and figure out what documents are needed and what can/ can't soak through the system!

Once we figure this out, we can thereby go about a way to establish a more, less-tumultuous route to get these illegals through the system legally- in a quicker, increasingly advanced form than the way it currently operates! After this...da da da da da

There needs to be a plan! And there isn't one because all their intentions are is to pass something quickly-- not so much strict, but as to be of at least some help temporarily! No!! That's not the answer, and that is superlatively unacceptable!

Those whom of which we have elected to exist in office off of the citizens rights.. with respects to vote, need to get off their high-horses and respect their position as to defend those who put them in office! Not only is that respect for their citizens, but this country, it's history, it's constitution, and it's motto! These people need to wake up!! This is not a government run by 1 soul! It is a government surviving by the people.. The United States people; DOCUMENTED CITIZENS!!
