A cult is associated with mass suicide and compounds, thus the word is considered "dirty". A religion however is a nice pleasant sounding word. So when someone, a religious leader, wants to belittle another religion inorder to "prove" their own supperiority they use words like "Mormonism is a cult, Catholicism is a cult, Hindu is a cult, etc" to create a negative image in someone's mind.
Ironicially people calling another religion a cult to validate their own cause employ the same techniques used by actual cultists to defend their own cause.

Because they read from the Book Of Mormon, and don't believe Jesus is God.
Christianity itself is a Cult. Christians point out a lot of flaws that the Mormons have, but in reality Christians have just as many. If anything Mormons have a more accurate idea of the Bible than most Christians do.
Sad but true.

According to the definiton of cult, all religions are cults. I dont personally believe that, but it doesn't make sense why Mormons would be singled out. Now the polygomous groups that broke off from the Mormon religion years ago are cults in my book, because they really live away from society, marry 13 year old girls, break the law, etc... but the LDS faith is not like this at all. There are 12 million members of The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and they are the 4th largest church of the world. They attend church on Sundays, and live out in society just like Catholics, Baptists, etc.. People call Mormons a cult just to cause trouble and upset people.

I don't think it's just Christians that consider Mormonism a cult. I am a Christian and I don't think of it as a cult, it is just another religion.

Cult:
1. A religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader.
2. The followers of such a religion or sect.
The mormon religion follows a modern-day prophet, and they have extreme beliefs compared to some other religions. They live unconventional, I mean, who this day has 10 kids?

Because SO MUCH of what they believe is NOT in the Bible. And please forgive me, but the Book of Mormon is little better than toilet paper to most people (see The Koran). The "Wisdom of the Pearl" and other books are just extra-biblical crap, that have nothing to do with true christianity. God says "not to become yoked with unbelievers" and that's what Mormons are. They believe Mr. Young has almost as much pull as Jesus Christ and this is nonesense. Mormons have inflicted GREAT mental pain on followers and change their beliefs to suit themselves. lol, see caffeine.
in other words, NO CAFFEINE, "oh what? We own Coca-Cola? Here Marie, have a Coke." Sound familiar? Sad.

Why do Mormons believe that they have the correct translation of scripture?
I think it comes down whether or not a person believes that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God or not. Mormons believe that he was, and "mainstream" Christianity does not.
What is the test? How do we know if a prophet, or someone who says he is a prophet was really from God? What about Muhammad?

Because of the belief of the mormons concerning Jesus Christ, mainly. They don't acknowledge him as the Christians do. Christians view Jesus Christ as God. He is 100% God and 100% man. Christians believe that Salvation comes through Him (Jesus) alone.

a lot of Christians consider Catholicism a cult, as well as every sect that does not match with their much more holy view of their extremely intolerant and militant selves
