Here's where Christianity stops being monotheistic, because both Jesus and God are supposed to be one and the same thing.
Since the Gospel makes it clear the disciples who accompanied him to Gethsemane were -asleep- at the time, and Jesus is reported to have wandered some distance from them, There is no actual eye-witness to this event except Jesus.
And immediately following this event, Judas and the troops show up and arrest Jesus. He had no time to relate what happened when he prayed to anyone.
So who is reporting Jesus' prayer-event on Gethsemane?
Add to the fact that unless Jesus has totally forgotten his connection with God, he already knows the answer to these prayer. The same question applies to his cries during the crucifixion ('my God, hast thou forgotten me.').
Either Jesus and God are disconnected during these events (ergo two different entities) and thus Jesus must consult with God about the next step.
Or Jesus and God are connected during these events in which case Jesus already knew the answer before he asked the question.
Can't say Jesus and God were connected and Jesus had to ask God to 'take this cup away from me'. If they're connected then Jesus -is- God and already knows how every event goes (God being omniscient and omnipresent). Why pretend he doesn't know?
Especially when all the witnesses were -sleeping-.
To avoid the argument that Christians actually worship three 'gods' (Christ, the Father, and the Holy Ghost), the primordial Roman Church invented the concept of the Holy Trinity: three aspects of God, all united and yet capable of operating independently.
This also avoids the argument that Jesus was a man, not a part of God. There were those willing to consider him a prophet, but not the Son of God nor a part of the Holy Trinity. Islam owes some of its influence to these people.
Remember, with the power of the Roman/Byzantine Empire, Christianity engaged in its own pogroms against so-called heretics. The Gnostics were such a group.
So we get at least two stories about events showing that Jesus is trying to sway the Father's decisions, and we're expected to believe they're connected and collectively form "God".
Hope that helps.

God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are three DIFFERENT people. They are just all in agreement on every issue. The idea of the trinity, three in one, came about during the Middle Ages and was a decision made by the leaders of the Catholic Church. You are correct, Jesus prayed to God. He said he would sit at the right hand of the Father and that he was sending the Holy Spirit. In Genesis, the Bible uses phrases like, we and us. Jesus proclaims he was sent by the Father. and God speaks of Jesus, the son in which he is well pleased when Jesus was baptized. They are definitely three different individuals, with three different roles to play in the world.
