Im a scuba diver so ive encountered quite a few sharks. They really arent interested in you and if you dont start flipping around they usually leave you alone. But just the thought of it is freaky, but they are still really cool animals to experience.

By 'encounter' are we talking 'yikes, shark nearby' or are we talking 'help, there's a shark on my leg'? If it's nearby, probably try and combine swimming like heck with making as little thrashing, I'm-an-injured-fish-come-and-get-me movements as possible. If it's already snacking on me? If I'm not going into shock, I'd probably be tempted to try out that story about punching a shark on the nose to let you go.

I have lived up on the sea several times in my life, and have only seen one great white shark. I have seen many things living on a boat, sea turtles, dolphins, stingray, whales, and moray els, but I have seen few sharks!
The one I saw up close and personal was more confused than me! Listen, I would take my chances in the sea over my chances in the ghetto any day! If I got ate, it would be in innocents!

Is it possible to scream underwater? I could try running as fast as I could. If the great white was any kind of a gentleman he would offer to take me to shore.

I would try not to panic and attempt to swim away with while drawing the least amount of attention to myself ( like flailing wildly and kicking).

I was always taught to poke or hit them in the gills. Also to hit them on the nose and pray to GOD that it goes away. If not, then you are screwed.

Punch it in the nose. It's the only thing I've ever heard of that helps.
