My relative was diagonised with colon and liver cancer. He's on chemotherapy right now, but refuses to eat anything other than oatmeal in the morning and ramen noodles with a mushroom broth at night. I'm sure this isn't healthy... do you guys agree?

My oncologist told me to eat what I could during my chemo treatments. Every person is different and it's better than not getting any nutrition at all. If he starts to have problems with something, they'll most likely catch it and get him on a supplement (I'm currently on potassium suppliments)

Another poster mentioned fresh fruits and vegetables. While undergoing regular chemotherapy (not high dose chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant) fruit and veg are generally fine as long as they are washed thoroughly. I had high dose chemo and a stem cell transplant and my doctors still encourage me to eat fresh fruits and veg (and my immune system was wiped out completely) but I was given instructions on proper handling and cleaning.

Be thankful he's eating, I spent almost two weeks on I.V nutrition because I couldn't eat. If you're still concerned, you might suggest he get a calorie/nutrition suppliment like Ensure.

Let him get through the chemo first. Even with the anti nausea drugs the only foods that tasted normal to me were tomatoes potatoes and eggs. Everthing elsed tasted metallic. Even when I did feel good enough to cook for my family I couldn't appreciate the full flavor of the food. Also, some chemo drugs cause sores in the mouth which make it difficult to eat anything.

My oncologist suggested my diet should always consist of green/leafy veggies are the best to eat. Chicken is good also. We should be avoiding diet soda, red meat, fatty foods. I see nothing wrong with him eating what he is, but that can not be his entire diet. Is he eating those things because he is not feeling well. There are wonderful anti-nausea drugs now. They work wonders. I hardly had any nausea at all after taking the pills. Best of luck to him and you.

Basically he can eat whatever he wants as long as there is nothing fresh such as fresh fruits. The veggies shouldn't be fresh either. The reason is the chemo reduces his ability to fight off disease. The fresh fruits and veggies have bacteria that normally we can fight off without any problem, but when your immune system is low you are not able. Also for the same reason honey should also be avoided. I mean unpastorized honey. Otherwise, whatever he wants let him have it.

As long as he is avoiding sugar and maybe taking a multi-vitamin that should be fine against cancer. If he was fighting the cancer with diet though it is not the best.

Beside those food to avoid, it's better to avoid contact with any toxic and chemical products or solutions. Currently many homes contain lot of these products which were bought from supermarkets nearby. If your home do have these, start considering to replace them.
