First off, why do you want to stay home? Do you think the vacation with the family is a dorky, geeky thing? Or are you planning to have a week of boozing, parties and wild sex? You don't say how long the trip is to be. One week, two weeks, three weeks? That could be a determining factor. Then have you ever been to Italy? Sometimes you have to grab what life throws out because a second chance never comes around again. Having been to Italy, I would say don't miss it. You have read all about the Colosseum, the Parthenon, the palaces, Venice, the Leaning Tower, the Vatican... go see it in person, be awed struck by the sheer magnitude of the buildings, all done without the machinery we use today. Take a look at the race track where men raced teams of horses around. You stand at one end and look at people on the other and they are tiny. I never realized how big everything really was until I stood beside the buildings. That was years ago, I will never get back, but I have those memories. It was worth every minute.
Sorry, I can't help you get out of the trip. I think you should go. However, talk with your parents and maybe on the trip you would be able to do some stuff on your own. A compromise... that is really being adult and grown-up.

I realize you don't want to do the "family thing", and travel all the way across the ocean, and would like to stay at home with friends. I totally understand... why do you want to drag me half way across the country??..
Having gone thru that stage in my life already, I'm not going to suggest you stay at home, go and be dragged half way across the world. Look at the sights, smell the smells from other countries, (look at the women from over there, as you are of age to look). Take advantage of the fact that you are young, and mom and dad are paying for you to go.
I wish I were that young again, and my parents had the opportunity to take me. Since they didn't, and knowing me, I won't ever make it. Go and enjoy yourself, or pout the whole time, but, while pouting, take a side peek at what is around you.
Have fun!
(You don't think much of it now, but, the memories will last a lifetime!)

What is wrong with you? A trip to Italy is a chance in a lifetime. Some of us never even get to dream about it and you don't want to go? Culture, food, people... You may even meet an Italian cutie over there. I wouldn't hesitate for a minute, Home and friends will be there when you get back and you will have amazing stories to share forever!!!

I think you are crazy to not take a free trip to Italy dude. Regardless of your relationship with your parents it may be a once in a lifetime trip. Plus at 16 you are a minor and technically not allowed to be home alone, at least in most US states.
No piece of tang is worth missing the Vatican or the leaning tower.

Think of it this way. In a couple of years you're either going to leave for college or out on your own. You won't get to spend much time with your family. This may be your last chance for a real family vacation with your parents. I think your Mom feels this way, that may be why she's insisting you go. You might never have this oppurtunity again and just think of all those lovely Italian girls!
