I had the same problem. I did the fabric and aluminum foil thing, and that didn't work. The toothpicks either. She pulled them out.
It was then suggested Cayenne Pepper sprinkled on the soil or lemon peels. I did the pepper and after a week she forgot all about the plants. It's been months now and it's still a go. Good luck.

Well, you can buy a cat deterrent spray from a home improvement center. Or you can sprinkle a mixture of black pepper and cayenne pepper in your plants. (That's the two main, and perhaps only, ingredients.) You will need to repeat this every now and then - watering washes it into the soil over time. Another option is to get a small spray bottle and give the cat a warning shot when it gets near the plants. I would use both in combination.

The spray bottle is a good idea, it gives em immediate negative reinforcement, but you have to catch em at it.

This looks weird but it works--we stick old soft balls and footballs in the planters then the cat can't stand on them. But visitors always think it looks crazy having old balls in your potted plants.

Cats hate stuff sticking out of the soil. Pine cones or something like that will do the trick.

Get soft screening and put in inside the top of the dirt. Then you can still water it and the cat cant get in it

Cover the soil with rocks. Less painful than the toothpicks for kitty.

Cover the dirt with something like a cloth or piece of plastic.

SPRAY BOTTLE ALWAYS WORKS. I HAVE ABOUT 4 AROUND THE HOUSE RIGHT NOW FOR MY 4 MONTH OLD KITTY. HE JUMPS UP ON THE COUNTERS AND DINING TABLES. I'M TRYING TO BREAK HIM OF THOSE HABITS.
