The wattage is the power rating of the amplifier, and indication of how much signal it can drive into a speaker. 100watts per channel mean that both the right and left stereo channels can output 100watts of power. This power rating is determined by the power at which the amplfier starts producing a certain amount of distortion (rated power). The *maximum* output power may be higher, but is not useable power because of distortion. How much power you need depends on the kind of speakers you have, and some need more power than others to produce the same volume. 100w/ch is a moderately powerful amp and is more than adequate for nearly all speakers in normal home-sized rooms.

If you amplifier is stereo, this means 100 watts per side. A home theatre system can have five channels each at 100 watts. Be careful when you are matching speakers to you amplifier. There are two confusing systems of rating - Peak Music Power and RMS (root mean squared) For instance 100 watts RMS is the same power 141 watts PMP. Be sure you know the power units to which you are referring. Good luck and protect your hearing. Levels above 85dB are dangerous and hearing loss can be permanent. Have fun.

The watt is the SI derived unit of power, equal to one joule per second. A human being climbing a flight of stairs is doing work at the rate of about 200 watts; a trained athlete can work at up to 900 watts for short periods. An automobile engine produces work at a rate of around 100,000 watts. A typical household, incandescent lightbulb uses 40 - 100 watts.

in audio 100 watts means that the receiver has been tested and can withstand a white noise output of 100 continuous watts for an extended period of time.

well easily put, a channel is basically one speaker hook up in a sense, so you should have at least 2 channels on an amp meaning if its two channels at 100 a piece . its a 200 watt amp more channels makes it most likely a highs amp meaning all the door speakers 6x9 so forth, usually a two channel amp is a subwoofer amp.
