There are fool proof tests for field sobriety. The blood and Breathalyzer is just for the Lawyers.

Honest ones, did balancing tests and you know could like smell and see the obvious effects..so they hooked and cooked.
Others said, be careful and don't drink and drive, and went on driving around till the donuts were ready.

just like speeding, Humm you look like you were going to fast.

Hmmm you were driving funny, you smell like beer, you are going to jail.

This was before miranda, before all the rights in court.
You could be arrested for DUI just because the officer testified you appeared drunk, acted drunk, looked drunk

Made the people walk a straight line, one foot in front of the other. Made them outstretch their arms and then touch their nose with a finger. Checked their eyes.

The police used to be much more lenient about it and it's not too hard to figure out if someone's had too much to drink or not.
