Check Disk is included in Windows XP and 2000. Check Disk has replaced Scan Disk. It searches the hard drive for problems, and then fixes them. To run it, click Start, My Computer. Right-click the hard drive (usually C:) and click Properties. Select the Tools tab. Click the Check Now button and select both boxes. Select “Automatically fix file system errors.” Also select “Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.”
Click Start. You must reboot the computer to make it run.
Run this regularly to keep your computer in tip-top shape.

There are definitely "scandisk like" functions in Windows XP.
One way is to use "chkdsk" from a command prompt. Type "chkdsk /?" to see all the options.
Another way is to:
1) Open "My Computer"
2) Right click on the drive in question and select "Properties"
3) Select the "Tools" tab
4) Under "Error Checking" click "Check Now"
