do them until it hurts then add 3 to 5 more - do it each day

It isn't a linear thing. Over the course of Army basic training (8 weeks) most recruits start being able todo between 25-50 pushups in 2 minutes and finish being able to do 42-72 pushups. By the time they they finish Infantry AIT (another 8 weeks), most Army recruits can do 65-85 in 2 minutes.

Probably at least 10 per week for a healthy male. It doesn't need to hurt. If you go along with popular belief females would gain fewer per week and would have a lower absolute maximum. But that doesn't mean you won't beat the males that aren't trying.

You should increase it by 5 a week.
