There is truth in this statement.
Not because the Bible is stupid... but because many humans (those who are "spiritually perishing") have vested agendas which make it very difficult for them to honestly evaluate the evidence for God and the truth of Christianity.
Difficult, but can be done however...
I used to be an atheist. Over a period of time however, I grew convinced of the existence of the Christian God, and ultimately committed my life to Christ (e.g., see http://www.godsci.org/gs/chri/testimony/seek.html ).
For scientific and intellectual evidence for the existence of God, see http://www.godsci.org/gs/godsci/evidence.htm
Cordially,
John

Well, actually, the Bible says at 1 Cor. 1:18 that it's the message of the cross that's foolishness to those who are perishing. That's why the need for Jesus to die on a cross to attone for our sins is so widely misunderstood -- by Jew and gentile alike. It's definately the most controversial subject in the NT, and a stumbling block for those who don't believe.

First of all,, That's NOT what it says. The Word never refers to itself as foolishness. OK?
Now. Go back and read that again.
Drop down to verse 21.
Foolishness: Jesus expresses a similar thought in Luke 10:24. It is God's intention that worldly wisdom should not be the means of knowing Him. (Foolishness) of the message preached. Not that preaching is foolish, but that the message being preached (Christ Crucified) is viewed by the world as foolishness.

1st- the way you have worded this question, you have taken scripture out of context. 2nd-the scripture says 1 cor 1:18 " for the word(the message) of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing( non-christians, but to us ( Christians) who are being saved it is the power of God. if you quote scripture keep it in it's proper context. get a study bible it a great tool for learning Gods Word.

1 Corinthians 1:18 says:
"For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God."
It means that the mockers against Christianity think that the Holy Scriptures are foolish, but these same mockers that think that are destined to perish.
While the people who believe the Holy Scriptures are saved because they know that God's Word has Power.

The scriptures are an ill translated hodgepodge of stories of tribes that lived 2000 years ago in the Middle East.

Well, of course they are foolish... though not to people who are 'perishing' they are foolishness to people who are 'rational' The bible, and the beliefs of Christianity cannot withstand the glaring light of reason and critical thought. Church leaders were aware that their teachings where total fabrications and utter nonsense, and that the only way they could survive and thrive was to disuade people from thinking. In fact, Lartin Luther, the 'Father of 'Protestantism', spells this out quite succinctly:
"Reason must be deluded, blinded, and destroyed. Faith must trample underfoot all reason, sense, and understanding, and whatever it sees must be put out of sight and ... know nothing but the word of God." ~ Martin Luther
"Reason is the Devil's greatest wh*re; by nature and manner of being she is a noxious wh*re; she is a prostitute, the Devil's appointed wh*re; whore eaten by scab and leprosy who ought to be trodden under foot and destroyed, she and her wisdom ... Throw dung in her face to make her ugly. She is and she ought to be drowned in baptism... She would deserve, the wretch, to be banished to the filthiest place in the house, to the closets." ~ Martin Luther
"Reason is the greatest enemy that faith has; it never comes to the aid of spiritual things, but -- more frequently than not -- struggles against the divine Word, treating with contempt all that emanates from God." ~ Martin Luther
"There is on earth among all dangers no more dangerous thing than a richly endowed and adroit reason... Reason must be deluded, blinded, and destroyed." ~ Martin Luther
"Reason should be destroyed in all Christians." ~ Martin Luther
Christianity is nothing more than a criminal business enterprise... in fact, it is the world's longest running and most successful Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) scam. The product they are selling is 'salvation'. FORTUNATELY, it only works on those who are gullible enough to fall for it. UNfortunately, THAT accounts for about 87% of the population of the USA. (There are a lot more people who DON'T know how to think properly than there are people who DO know how to think properly.) That is why there are a lot more religious people in the USA than there are 'Free-thinkers'... including Atheists. Also, Christians are generally too dense to realize that proselytizing (spreading the 'good news') is a key element of the Christian MLM MARKETING PLAN, which was instituted after Christianity lost the political power that had previously allowed them to simply torture and kill anybody who did not comply. Now, they attempt to just pester people to death, through persistent obliviousness and obnoxiousness.
Interestingly, statistics on supernatural beliefs count the USA with backward, developing Third World nations, rather than among modern, advanced industrial powers. How does it feel to be a contributor to that backwardness?

"Businesses may come and go, but religion will last forever, for in no other endeavor does the consumer blame himself for product failure." ~ Harvard Lamphoon, "Doon" (paraphrase)

I know they sure seemed that way to me before I became a Christian. We just have to know when we communicate with non-Christians, that is the way they are going to receive it at first.
But without scripture, there is no other way to show them the true way to God. He says His word is a two-edged sword. It cuts through all the crap and shows a person the light. Then they get to choose.

Amen! It is obvious that people who think The Bible is a fairy tale or man made nonsense are not on the path to salvation. Once again, God knows all.

because they are full of pride and cant understand the truth exposed in the Words of the Bible....its like in the song amazing Grace--- the words say "I once was blind but now I see".....that is referring to the fact that their eyes...spiritual eyes have been opened upon their salvation and they can now see the truth in Gods words.......so until ones eyes are opened by the salvation experience they can not understand the truth of Gods Word....
