Try martial arts. They are an individual sport where you are primarily competing against yourself. The most important aspect in chosing a school is to determine whether or not the teacher and students share your personality. If they are a fun group who want to work hard and still have fun, then I would gravitate towards that school. Interaction between the instructor and students will make it obvious which school would be most suited to you. Also you may consider bodybuilding. No you don't have to train to become Arnold Schwartenegger but you can train to get in better shape. This will also introduce you to new people who are interested in health and fitness.

Getting out there will also help you overcome your shyness. I am shy as well and find it isn't so bad after you've gone out and done it.

In the meantime how to become more co-ordinated? Use a workout ball (the big ones people sit on and work out on), stand on 1 leg (the act of balancing trains your stabilizer muscles and improves your reaction times), I am a chiropractor and I always get my patients to stand on 1 leg to rehab the stabilizer muscles in their low back. I also make it more dificult for them by having them close their eyes will doing it and when really advanced they juggle or play catch with a family member.

Get involved in any sport you want. Nobody says you have to do that 1 sport for the rest of your life. Try them all and find the one you like. Instructors prefer big classes and will be eager to have you join.

Maybe something a little less daunting than trying to jump into team sports at school, would be to get into some kind of solo sport. That way you could practice and become more confident of your athletic abilities without putting yourself in a situation that might end up feeling defeating or embarassing. Perhaps something like tennis, where you could take individual lessons with an instructor and build your strength, coordination, and endurance. Good luck!
