I take the coconut in the palm of my Left hand, and tap the opposite side of the nut with a hammer in my right hand several times. The coconut will begin to crack, you will hear a difference in the sound of the taps when it does.
If you want the milk first, put a Phillips screwdriver in the eyes at one end of the coconut, turn and push until it penetrates the nut. The milk will drain out the hole you made. Do two holes, one for an air vent. There are usually 3 places to push a screwdriver through.

If you want a clean cut this is how I do it..
1st. drill holes in the eyes of the coconut. and drain the milk.
2nd cut through the shell with a hack saw in a complete circle around the coconut.
3rd. take a chef's knife and pierce through the crevice made by the hack saw.
4th slowly cut through the meat of the coconut the same way you did the shell.
this will give you 2 half's. Then put them face down and tap around the shell cracking it like you would to peel a boiled egg.
if you have chosen a perfectly ripe coconut it should release from it's shell easily.

The way we do it is to take it outside but anyways take it outside and hit it on a HARD ground surface until it break in half and if you want to keep the water from the inside take a big bowl with you so when its opened in half you can place it in the bowl and the bowl will hold the water after all that take it back inside and cut it into pieces and ENJOY! YUM! i LOVE coconut!

The easiest way is to bore a hole in one of its "eyes", drain out the juice, then stick it in the oven, then turn it on 350 degrees, for about 20 minutes or so. The heat will crack the shell to pieces then you just break'em off.
Be sure and drain the juice first or it might explode in the oven.

Hold it in your hand over a lage bowl and hit it firmly around the middle with the back of a heavy knife. Rotate it in your hand so that you hit it all the way around it should break into two nice halves

take a knife and cut a hole in the top, make sure it is a strong knife though. Then pour out the milk and, if you want to, force the knife through the center of the coconut splitting it in half.

OK, first, take a big butcher knife. Hammer the edge of the coconut with the knife and the edgefalls off.
