Need help.. Harry potter cake for daughters b`day?

Question

I promised my daughter I would make her a harry potter cake... Any ideas as to how i would go about this?

I know how to make cakes... I make them often. I dont need a recipe, just ideas as to how I would make it look like harry potter or something from the films etc..

go to your local grocerie store and go to the cake decoration isle and they usualy have cake decorations all all kinds there. if that fails then go to a bakery and ask them if they would be able to do an edible picture for you. all you wold have to do is bring them a certain picture and they can print it on edible paper with ebible ink(food coloring)

let me think about it for a minute. Do you have a Harris Teeter grocery store near you? I remember seeing a Harry Potter theme cake in their theme cakes notebook a few months ago. I can't remember what it looks like though.

Check in toy stores for Harry Potter stuff. Maybe you can find a toy castle that can be Hogwarts and use that on one corner of the cake. You could have a part of the cake be the enchanted forest outside the castle, with a trail or pathway through it, and a dragon or two hiding behind some trees. I'm sure you can find toy trees and dragons somewhere. You could use chocolate frosting for the path through the trees. You could use blue frosting to make the lake. It would be nice if you found a little toy mermaid to put on the lake.

I did this years ago for one of my sons. We weren't able to find an actual pan from Wilton so I just made a castle. Start out by making a regular rectangle size pan. I bought a cheap milkshake mixer that contained a metal cylinder. I was able to actually grease the cylinder, fill it up halfway with cake batter and bake it to use for the torrents. I bought an over sized, cardboard sheet cake platter and painted in the moat, drawbridge, trees, etc. around the castle with the appropriate colored icings. After the cake was assembled, I used the Reison dark chocolate candies for the battlements on the top of the castle. I also cut out some paper, affixed it to toothpicks, and colored them in to be the Hogwart's flags. You can than decorate and put the details on the castle anywhere you like. Also, if you can find a plastic dragon and some alligators to add to the top and the moat, it just adds extra charm. Those are pretty easy to find at a Dollar store in the toy department. This has long held the record of being my son's favorite birthday cake and I make him one to go with his birthday party theme each year.

If you go to a cake decorating supply store they sell kits used for the Harry Potter cake scene for usually around $7 or so. This will also come with an idea as to how to decorate the scene around the figures.

Is there a Kroger near you? If there is, they sell Harry Potter cakes. But you can still go the homemade route if you want, but the Kroger here will let you buy the "kits" they use for the cakes. Because my son wanted a Batman cake, but he wanted an ice cream cake from Dairy Queen. They did not do Batman. So we got him the cake from Dairy Queen and bought the Batman kit from Kroger. We painted on some bats to add to the theme.

I like the idea of the sorting hat! Or how about a book of spells - you could personalise the spell 'recipe' on an open page, and model some of the spell ingredients (i.e frogs, worms, etc) to scatter around it. There is a wonderful cook book cake in Carol Deakin's No Time Party Cakes that you could use to base your model on.

I used a Harry Potter coloring book as a model, you can find them at pharmacies or book stores. You can use a photocopier to enlarge the picture. I just drew the design on the top of a round cake, then colored it in with icing (colored).
My son was very happy.

Instead of trying it yourself & running the risk of ruining the cake (I'm not insulting your cake making abilities), have a local bakery make it. My mother makes cakes like you do & when a friend of hers threw me a baby shower, we went professional, to a bakery. Some grocery stores make children's cakes with popular themes. So do a lot of bakeries. Coldstone Creamery in the source below has some too, if you can afford their prices. Also check with Costco or Sam's Club. Sam's did my baby shower cake & it was awesomely done.

I'm sure you can do the cake. Since you haven't made one before, it's best to see one made that you can take pictures of to practise with later.

Maybe you can make an owl,or the dragon he had to fight or let see a you could draw his face on their and use the whipped frosting to do it. You could use black liquorish for the glasses,hair. Or maybe you could get a picture of him and have them put on of the photos on the cake. That might cost some money.

SPOILER In HP7, I quite loved the scenes about Snape; theory his lack of existence scene properly-written, with him giving Harry his very last breath for the Pensieve... And the scenes of Snape's thoughts that Harry sees contained in the Pensieve are purely right, o.k. executed. won't be able to attend to make certain scenes like this contained in the action picture. contained in the films out to this point, i favor to make certain the Patronuses plenty. Luna replaced into purely right in OoP. Love Hagrid and Sirius. each and every of the Weasleys. huge Hermione fan. (Gotta say i wish 'they' deal with the scenes of Harry's scar hurting extra ideal than they did in OoP, though.) I nevertheless smile even as i imagine of that Muggle automobile that Arthur made magic, and the lads took off in... & the whomping willow, and the spiders, and how the automobile purely gave up then and drove itself away. The Chamber of secrets and techniques...relaxing. scary. solid e book and action picture. I loved seeing Quidditch suits, too. pretty Harry's first, even as he catches the golden snitch in his mouth. Yeah, there is plenty to love. solid ole' magic and solid vs. evil relaxing!
