He's happy. Dogs rub on the grass or carpet to show this. It's a sign you had a good walk!!

Dogs perform that behaviour for three reasons, 1 They are wet and attempting to dry thier faces/ears. 2. They are trying to transfer a scent onto thier fur (like rolling in urine, dead fish etc) 3 and I think this is the explanation for your dog...The are trying to remove the scent particles on thier faces after a walk or eating/smelling spices/herbs in food, smelling perfume or other strong scents. If your dog is also sneezing and snorting that means he is trying to clear all the smells out of his nose and off of his face, so he will be able to smell different scents better without all sorts of foreign smells stuck to his fur and face. Generally dogs do not do this to mark territory as they do not have scent glands on thier faces like cats.

I would agree with the marking territory. But, my Bulldog also does it whenever he gets swatted on the nose- by a cat, another dog or whatever. It always looks to me as if he is trying to scratch a difficult spot and get something out.

i've never heard of it being used to mark his territory, i'de say its just a habit, dogs have habits like humans, he likes it and its become a habit, thats my best guess
