I would wait to be on the safe side. Three year olds tend to run with things in their mouths, so there is a danger of it going down the wrong way.

It depends on the kid. My daughter was very advanced for her age on most things so her chewing gum at 3 wasn't a big deal. Her sister, on the other hand, I probably won't allow NEAR gum until she's 10.. lol. I think 3, 4, 5 .. those are all good ages, depending on the kid. The parents know best.

I didn't think my daughter was old enough either but my mom had already been letting her chew it. She's only 27 months. She knows not to swallow it. We always watch her when she's chewing it and we only give her small pieces. She only gets sugar-free gum on the occasions that she does get to have some. As long as your niece is being monitored while she has gum, she will be okay.

Why would you want to give a 3yo gum?! That's obscene... She does NOT need to have gum or any kind of candies until she's older and can care for her own teeth properly. Gum is NOT good for her teeth. Many parents use "Oh, it's just the baby teeth, they'll fall out." as an excuse to apease their kids with sweets, but if she cannot care for the first set who's to say that she hasn't formed bad habits that will carry over into the next set. But I digress... NO GUM FOR 3YOS!!!

At this age she's got the chewing thing down so it's pretty safe. My rule is that if they are old enough to keep it in their mouth then they can chew it. She will probably just chew it up and swallow it the first couple of times though.

Yeah, I think three years old is too young. I think about six years old was when I tried it with my son, but he had to "prove" that he could safely chew it before I would give him any more. Try distracting your neice with something else.

Oh to be a three year old today.. =\
Just because she's fascinated with it doesn't mean she should have it. Personally I'd say 6 or so, but I'm not a huge fan of giving children candy so young.

My three year old chews gum. Start with small pieces and make sure they are supervised. Also make sure they understand that they CHEW It and NOT eat it.

I agree with the other poster who said that it depends on the child. I let my daughter chew gum when she was three, but she also understood that you are not supposed to swallow it.
It is also up to the parents, so if you are wondering about your niece, ask her parents and see what they say.
