It's called The Human Comedy, or equally The Human Tragedy.

Figure it like this: Take just the surface costs (not including the hidden costs running into the future) split 50% among the entire population of Iraq and split the remaining 50% to create better housing, education, health care and nutrition for the bottom quintile of the US population ... now there would be two countries considerably better off, maybe even some of our allies and adversaries would see fit to copy this action. If that doesn't appeal, how about investing a good portion of that money in an emergency program to spur the development of renewable energy, so petroleum could not be used as an instrument of blackmail?

Oh... must have dozed off ... what an interesting dream that was for a moment. Too many politicians everywhere, whether democratically elected or despotically self-appointed, have a sad tendency to think only about as far as their expected term of office. "Apres moi, le deluge" (forgive the absent accent marks) may prove not just a slogan, but a premonition...

Perhaps the poor should join the Army, then they will be fed quite well.

How much starvation do you think there really is in the US??? If you spent a pile of money as one person sugested to raise the standard of living of the bottom quintile, there will STILL BE a bottom quintile. How many of those folks are actually unable to afford food??? Most have the basic necessities of life, food, water, clothing, shelter, etc. Being "poor" in this country means your family only has one car and one TV. It is high time we start looking at this glass as 3/4 full and not 1/4 empty.

Nations are run by politicians [scoundrels as per Churchill?]. They want votes from poor to increase their lead, then when (1)they can't deliver that they promised and (2) to divert the attention of the people from important issues, they go on war with like-minded nation. At times I doubt that at times, such war is stage-managed. The most important reason is the nation pays financially and politicians don't have to pay from grandfather's or father's kitty.

It cost money for bombs and things but poor people can get a JOB and buy food. The real answer to feeding the poor has never been sending money or food - it has been getting the lazy asses to work. We send jobs to Mexico - why not send some to Africa.

because unfortunately to many countries war = profit. It's about making money...they get no returns for feeding or housing the poor.

i guess its the way a government of a certain country allocates its budget, the money is there, but its whats the priority of the government that counts. with the current events going on, its most likely that the government focuses more on "defense", as they term it, rather than feeding the poor
