Generally you won't HAVE to book. But it really is better to do so. Keep away from Irish Ferries. They stung me badly twice once at Pembroke and once at Holyhead. Stena are brilliant and best for your needs. They go from Rosslare and Holyhead.

yes, just drive into the ferry gates at 90 mph,lets face it,no one is going to stop that.

No you have to book. Book online with either http://www.po-ferries.com (P&O) or http://www.stenaline.com (Stena Line).
