I have a really long reading list for college this summer and I couldn't find all the books at my library and when I asked how long it would take if my library ordered them, they said several weeks. But I'll be in college by that time. Is there any way I can read them online or something? Like is the Google library open yet?

It would help me answer your question better if you'd posted the books you're having trouble finding. Most classic books published before the turn of the century (1900) or even a little later are available online to read. Books like Pride & Prejudice or The Count of Monte Cristo.

There are places you can download ebooks for free if you act before August 4, 2006, and there are places available where you can read them online for free.

For books still under copyright protection, you could try three things:

1) Interlibrary loan them from other libraries. Most libraries have this capability to help out their patrons. And if the book is readily available there should be no problem. However if there are only 50 libraries in the world with that book...you may have a problem getting it!

2) Go to a used bookstore. I go to Half-priced books. Sometimes, if its classic literature you're looking for, you can get "half off" a really low price. For example, if you find a book with a list price of 2 or 3 dollars because it was published in the sixties or something. Regardless...paperbacks should be affordable ranging from 3 to 6 dollars.

3) Try looking online for used books. Amazon, ebay, half.com, etc.

Read as many of them as you can now, order the ones that your library doesn't have and hope they arrive sooner -- libraries often tell you the longest likely wait time so that people don't harrass them too much.

There are collections of books on line, but most of them are older material; not current texts. You may have luck you may not.

Try Amazon.com - they sell used books for cheap.
