Go to a local private language school like Inlingua or the British Institutes, which is probably staffed with English or American citizens. Ask them for a referral to a dentist they trust.

I'm really sorry to tell you, but you should know that Italy have great dentists, only that they are not cheap at all, healthy teeath in Italy really cost. They do speak english, so if something happens you get some help, they are nice people. My advise is, before going in any vacation, or any country, go get a control of your health (speacially teeth) to see if everything is in order to be sure you won't have problems.

you, if i were you, i would simply meet italians who speak english, at a bar, at a restaurant, at your school, at different places for those who speak english and simply ask in the middle of the conversation, 'oh by the way, i was just wondering do you know wherei can find a cheap dentist aroudn the area?' or in italian, 'ah! volevo chiederti una cosa, sai per caso, dove si puo' trovare un buon dentista che non costa troppo??'.
the reason why im telling you this is because in my experience here in italy for over 4 years, ive learned to get around simply by asking people i know and getting the best answers than going through the trouble of going to main offices, the chamber of commerce, blablabla and wasting my time. remember here in italy, things can get really ridiculous, like offices closing before their daily hours, or the excuse that the person who can answer you question is on vacation, or its holiday or they send you to another spot, you go there and its the wrong adress.......ive been through ALL of that, its horrible, so i take the other route if i were you.

Ask the concierge of your hotel. He/she should be able to provide you with a local dentist and should make the emergency appointment for you because they should speak english. If you are in a youth hostel ask the front desk for information if a dental clinic is available with no appointment necessary for emergencies. If that fails call the embassy of your country. They should have an answer. In the meantime if you have tooth pain purchase baby teething medication or toothache medication. If you can not find that then try swishing your mouth with brandy. Brandy works. Good luck.
