"Bud" is a nickname for people who are named the same as their dads. Bud thus means offshoot. Buddy is often a further nickname, for Bud. Buddy is also used, however, to mean "good friend." (Only rarely is it used contemptuously to underscore that the speaker really doesn't consider you a friend. Otherwise, the word Buddy is nothing at all to be offended by.)

depends on where you are, I have worked with Newfies a bit and they call everyone buddy, and I worked in Toronto for a while and you just call the bums buddy as in buddy can you spare a dime and it is insulting. What to say, a Newfy says buddy its OK,A Torontonian says it only as a mildly insulting form of address.

it is a generic term that most guys use like 'pal,' 'man,' or 'boy' or 'amigo.' if you are looking for something to be offended at, you are likely to find it! Grown men know there are more important things to worry about...and that wasn't meant to be condescending, i am just saying...

Hmm. Not at all. Because "buddy" means a friend or mate. I find no reason to be insulted.

No. They are trying to be friendly. Many grown men are called "buddy"...certainly down at my local bar.

If something as insignificant as being called 'Buddy' upsets you, you are nowhere near being a 'grown man'.

Just calmly say, "I prefer that you call me "Steve". (or whatever your name is) Become a broken record, and say it over and over until they get it. As far as it being condescending, it really only matters what YOU think. Do YOU think it is condescending?

Whenever I say buddy to a guy, I'm talking down to them because I'm mad at them. If I say friend, I want to help you because I don't agree with them. If I say pal, I like you.

I would be offended.

No, they don't know your name, so what can they call you. Many years back, it was Hey Mac! so now it's buddy. So relax, just tell them your name, and all will be well.
