People thought they were so smart and decided to build a tower (the tower of Babel) so they could reach Heaven. God caused them to speak different languages so that they could not finish building the tower. If no one can understand one another, they can't work together. Makes sense.

LOL. In reading some of these answers, I was astonished to learn that some people actual BELIEVE that tower of Babel nonsense. The basis for that story is the Biblical view of the universe, in which all that exist are the earth and heaven, which are separated by a solid 'firmament', and upon which the sun, moon and a few thousand stars are hung. In other words, the firmament is the SKY... and heaven is on the other side of the sky.

So, people started to build the tower of Babel in order to reach heaven (on the other side of the sky) and confront god. God became fearful that they would actually succeed in encroaching upon his domain, and so he confounded their speech so the could not succeed.

The most revealing thing about this story is NOT the fact that people had such a bizarre understanding of what he universe was like... it is that God, the creator, is such a dumbass that HE is not even aware of the configuration of the universe that he, himself, created. This bone-head deity, just like the creatures that he created, thinks that he lives on the other side of the sky.

Cultures are drastically different. Languages tend to differ based on culture, like if one culture values a particular social structure, the language may reflect that. Even pidgin or creole languages tend to favor this. In Hawaii, where I'm from, "Hawaiian pidgin" has been influenced by many different languages (like English, Hawaiian, Chinese, Filipino, etc) because of the mix of cultures and need to communicate.

Simple. Marketing problems. There were no marketing tools to sell those "product" when they first came out so, unaware of their existence, other "products" were created in different places to supply the local demand.
Nowadays you can consume as many as you can afford. They are everywhere and come in all forms and sounds, to satisfy the most demanding consumers.
There's no monopoly.
Wonderful isn't it!?
