Yes, I believe "jerk" is equivalent literally to "wanker", but I think maybe the word "jerk" is a bit of a milder insult (although I can't profess to be an expert on UK slang). These days it's just a general type of offensive term, usually used toward a person who you think is rude.

Doesn't wanker mean jerk off? When we call someone a jerk it means they are an ***,or to put it nicely, a butt. In other words an idiot.

Considering a jerk-off is a **** u would think so but i believe its not seen as strong a word as wanker is in uk. At the end of the day they are all dumb jerk-off wankers anyway so what the hell??

It's in that vein but deeper. Them's fighting words between men and when your woman's throwing it around you screwed up large. As best as I understand "wanker" ( and my old Dad was from Jolly old John Bull Himself so I do understand ) means when you masturbate, when your a piss about kind of person as well. Another one that will get the boys kicking the crap out of each other is Goof, way worse in my neck of the woods, which is Ontario Canada. I'm pretty sure that it translate into the States as well.

It does not literally mean the same thing, as in "someone who masturbates", but it is used in the same fashion to mean a idiot, fool, annoying person, etc.

Taken from Google web definitions: "In slang, the term "jerk" can be used to describe a foolish, rude, immature, stupid, or contemptible person. This word was originated with the "jerkwater" towns of mid 19th century America, the pit stops the old steam engine trains needed to make to "jerk" water to the train, to bring it from the river to the train. The term "jerkwater" came to represent any small, remote town. The term "jerk" was then derived from these towns to represent inferior, unimportant people."

Wanker = One who wanks but is also applied to idiots, time wasters, rude asses etc etc etrc
Jerk off = One who wanks but is also applied as above
Jerk = Less specific, not necessarily one who jerks off but merely a right prat.

Sigh what a jerk off answer

I think "jerk" usually implies someone who's intentionally meaner than a "wanker" is. And it seems like "wanker" implies someone who's a little stupid, too. "Jerk" doesn't necessarily require any stupidity.

Jerk is a dull stupid fatuous person, and yes, its the same as a wanker.
