Unfortunatly I can't see Scotland even getting to the World Cup in 2010. The reason I believe this is not because of the players we have. It is because of the way the qualifying system works.
Because Scotland are ranked 41st in the world we are always going to face at least 2 countries that are higher in the rankings than we are. The group for Euro 2008 is proof of this as we have been placed in a group with both of the World Cup finalists, Italy and France, and if that wasn't bad enough we have to deal with Ukraine as well. With only 2 teams going through from the group I think it's fair to say we ain't going to Euro 2008.
If Scotland want to get a more realistic group then they have to be further up the rankings. But to do this we need to beat teams in Europe much better than us. Now this is unfair as due to their qualification system Mexico and U.S.A. are pretty much guarenteed a World Cup spot. This is simply unfair on some of the teams in Europe who have been 'cheated' out of a place. Look at Demark or Euro pian Champions Greece. Surely they would have been better for the competition than teams like Angola or Iran or England who have no chance of winning the competition.
Another reason why Scotland won't even qualify is because Walter - just like every other recent Scotland manager - favours the Old Firm too much. My personal choice for the Scotland team in 4 years tim would at the moment be:
GK Craig Gordon
LB Kevin McNaughton
CB Russel Anderson
CB Stephen McManus
RB Steven Craigen
LM James McFadden
CM Darren Fletcher
CM Paul Hartley
RM Chris Burke
ST Kris Boyd
ST Shaun Maloney
Come on Scotland. Bring on the World.

Probably not.
History favours the big teams, such as Italy, Brazil, Germany, Argentina, etc. Whereas "smaller" countries spring the odd surprise and do well i.e. Sweden, South Korea, Bulgaria, (all losing semi-finalists).
As for Scotland, we had a good qualifying record from 1974 - 1998, where our priority aim was to reach the second phase. Now our aim is just to qualify for the tournament.
So I would think that if we aim to finish 3rd or better in the Euro qualifiers, and maybe climb the FIFA rankings then our 2010 qualifying group may be more favourable.
The Tartan Army just want to savour a big tournament atmosphere again, anything above that is a bonus. So if we DO qualify for South Africa 2010, then who knows?

Love Scotland but you're dreaming. Name a side who have never gone past rd. 1 bursting thru to win it all?Scotland have to qualify, too. This ain't the '70s, mate. Soccer skills in Scottish players are at an all-time low in the 21st century.

Scotland will qualify for the World Cup, no matter who is in their qualifying group.
They won't win. but ...
I don't care what all you doubters say, they will make the WORLD CUP!
If anything, Germany is bound to become World Champions in 2010.
