Here's a very interesting link that deals really well with the sun/ozone hole/cancer connection. I think it should answer any questions you might have. I was in oz from October - December 2005 and I wore sunblock the whole time just as a precaution. I didnt get burned because I wore a t shirt after I started to feel warm. If you take normal precautions you should be fine. AND you'll have a wonderful time if you go there! If I could, I'd move there in a minute!

I agree with most of the people who have answered you, You Need To Wear Sunscreen here in Australia. If you remember to reapply it every 3-4 hours and wear a hat then you should have no problems. I have lived here in South Australia all of my life and have seen too many tourists get burnt from not putting on or reapplying sunscreen. The ozone hole is affecting everyone in the world so it's not only Australia where you need to sun smart.
So don't let people discourage you from visiting our lovely country

I live in Northern Queensland the most tropical part of Australia, if you come from the UK with pale skin you are more likely to feel the full force of what the sun is like here.

The ozone hole from what I have heard is more deadly over the bottom of Australia known as "Tazmania" it may feel cold there are stages but strangely enough you will get more burnt there than where I am.

If you come to Australia be prepared to use sunscreen and wear a hat. I have seen far too many tourists in my ares who have pale skin and turn blood red on the back.

See you in Australia :)

The hole in the ozone has probably made it worse, but the sun is bad anywhere - wear sunscreen

It has nothing to do with the ozone hole. It is no more or less harmful than the sun at similar latitudes anywhere in the world. It has more effect because we whitefolk are poorly adapted to living in tropical and sub-tropical latitudes.
