If it's really not so bad, I'd like to know What prison this is so I can try to arrange for a cherished friend to be transferred there! The top notch medical/dental care I'm always hearing about would be nice!He had a small cavity in one tooth and the answer was to pull the tooth, he needs to see a doctor to renew a prescription for a chronic condition (no, it's not a drug with any recreational potential, it's Prilosec) but can't see the doc because he is not bleeding, and when he does get that script renewed, he'll be paying for it or rather either his mom or I will be doing so. The situation has gotten so bad with prison health care that a federal judge recently ordered the whole department into recievership.
He shares a 6 x 12 cell with one other man, and counts himself lucky that there are not 3 in that cell due to the amazingly overcrowded state of the facility, he gets to leave that cell about 4 hours a day, including shower, chow, dayroom and yard time... and THAT is when the facility is not on lockdown due to drastic understaffing, or violence, real or rumoured...on lockdown, they're in the cell, 24/7, food passed through the door, etc the only thing that keeps going is the mail (and by the way, I send him paper, envelopes and postage, unless it is a letter to one's attorney of record AND there is no money on one's books, the prison does not pay for letters)....the educational programs, IF an inmate qualifies AND if there is a slot available in the class.....and surely you see the need to try to educate these people to improve the chances of their becoming productive citizens upon release?
The showers are hot and reasonably clean, but inmates buy their own soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc. (Not really complaining about that, just making the point)
The food is a joke, and is barely legal in quantity and quality... most inmates get VERY creative with the top ramen that is available at the commisary...
And it is everlastingly boring, you have no choices about who is around you and unless you're eligible to work or take classes, there is nothing much to occupy your mind... you can't even dress as you'd choose.

As to recreational activities, contrary to popular myth, if there are video games, it has not been mentioned to me... Television is available in the day room where what to watch is decided by vote...any TVs or radios in the cells were not provided by the state, either the inmate or someone like me purchased them and like quarterly packages and phone calls (collect and incredibly costly) they are a privilige that is EARNED... Surely everyone can see the value of rewarding good behavior?

By the way, my friend is what they call a model inmate, he has had no disiplinary problems inside.
I could go on and on, but I really want to know what prison all these commonplace stereotypes of fun and games are based on, because it sure as hell is not in California!

Is he in a federal prison? I've heard its easier to do time in a federal prison. As for state prisons,it probably depends on what state you are from. Prison life can be hard not just for the offender, but for their family. You could get raped and beaten in prison. Some prisons only have TV sets in the day room, which all the offenders share, so everyone has to watch the same thing. You have to work and some states do not pay you for the work you do. Not only that you have to put up with correctional officers that can be real @ssholes. They can write you a disciplinary for any little thing that prevent you from early release.

Most prisons can be pretty bad. Your own room and cable tv don't compare to a lack of freedom. Prisoners have to constantly watch out for themselves and their safety. It's an environment where they always have to be concerned about someone ripping them off, raping them, or wanting to physically harm them. Their are gangs, drugs, and occasionally corrupt guards. It really doesn't seem like a cool place to be.

but that 9 by 6 cell often shared with another person is all he has. He has to eat what they fix ( and spit into at times and with inmate cooks even worst at times)

They get up when they are told, go to sleep when they are told.

But many don't have that TV, and many don't have a window.
many have concrete on all four walls, and a metal door with one small slot window and a slot for a food tray.

And of course gangs, crime in prison, and other problems are not nice either.

No, they should be worse. It must be awful, being sent to prison for, I don't know, breaking the law maybe - and then having a window and cable tv.

No, not really. It's the company that you are forced to deal with that seems to be the bad part! Many prisoners belong in mental hospitals, but since the ACLU passed laws to give the Mentally incompetent their civil rights, many of these people are in the streets & in our prisons.

I spent 10 years in 4 different prisons, from maxium security to minium security and all of us are suppose to live by the convict code, that is you see nothing, speak nothing, and hear nothing. If you can follow those then you'll get along okay, if not then your time can be hard!
