Where does hamburger come in tubes? Butchers take real meat and grind it themselves. At least they do at the grocery store I shop at. As the others have said, it based on the fat content. Hamburger that comes from Certified Angus Beef is priced higher than that from ordinary beef.

They are not the same & In Canada it is illegal to misrepresent the cut of meat.
Ground Meat Standards

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Retailers are responsible for ensuring that the ground meats that they offer for sale are packaged and labelled in accordance with Canadian legislative requirements. Additionally, such products must not be labelled, advertised, packaged or sold in any false or misleading manner.

The Food and Drugs Act in conjunction with the Meat Inspection Act prescribes the following common names and standards for ground meat. In this respect, it is imperative that a product labelled with a given common name contain only that which is allowed by the corresponding standard:

COMMON NAME STANDARD
Extra Lean Ground [naming the species]* shall be boneless, skinless meat of the species indicated that has been ground and shall not contain more than 10% fat
Lean Ground [naming the species]* shall be boneless, skinless meat of the species indicated that has been ground and shall not contain more than 17% fat
Medium Ground [naming the species]* shall be boneless, skinless meat of the species indicated that has been ground and shall not contain more than 23% fat
Regular Ground [naming the species]* shall be boneless, skinless meat of the species indicated that has been ground and shall not contain more than 30% fat
† Annex 1, Meat Inspection Regulations, 1990
* [Naming the species] = beef, pork, chicken, turkey, etc.
It should be noted that the standards provided above do

If Regular ground beef is on sale I'l buy it for Chili or spagetti sauce where it has to be browned first. You can really tell all the extra fat that comes off it.
Prefer lean for hamburgs. Doesn't flare up on the Grill.

Sorry, you are mistaken about that. The cheaper the price, the more fat is put in. Try buying "ground beef" that has 20-30% fat. Then get ground sirloin with 7% fat. Fry 2 burgers with each type. The one with more fat will shrink more.

rubbish. it's graded according to fat content and sometimes by which part of the cow it came from. the most expensive isn't always the best and the least expensive isn't always the worst. the least expensive is not likely to be the best though but probably good enough for most people. i never eat beef (yuck) but have to purchase it for other people who eat in my home.

That is not true, hamburger is based on how much meat and how much by product is added to it and of what part of the beef it comes from ie: lean meat .

No they are not aware of that because it is not true. The fat content varies so it effects the taste. However, all hamburger may very well have mad cow prion in it. Cheers!

Not necessarily. Read the label correctly, some hamburger may contain more fat than others.
