Hi,
Buddha did not claim that he was god. But rather, a teacher with whom his students should examine his teachings carefully before following them.
Buddhist do not worship the Buddha as an omnipotent being. The symbolism of depicting him is to remind us that we too have that potential of achieving Buddhahood.
Do a search on Lama Zopa Rinpoche, Lama Yeshe and Shangpa Rinpoche. They are all excellent teachers.
Hope you find happiness in the Dharma.

The Buddha never calmed to be god, Buddhists only highly respect him as a teacher. So really Buddhism is more of a philosophy then a religion. Buddism by itself is atheist.
So you can still be Christian and still be Buddhist, because in Buddhism, there is no God so yes, there is still room to be Christian and Buddhist all at once. Only, dont go to far on the non-self thing, Then you have no religion.

You don't need to know anything in particular. You don't even have to be Buddhist. In Zen Buddhism the only goal is to acquaint yourself with your ordinary original mind. This can happen more efficiently if you do zazen (sitting meditation).
Zen is the only sect I can talk about, but I can't say much. The one thing I can say is that zazen is essential to practice. So learn how to sit (it's simple). Try searching for the New Orleans Zen Temple website, it's a great source to learn zazen.
And no, Buddha wasn't a God, but in texts he had some supernatural powers, but that hardly matters. Just sit.
Enjoy.
PS-If your looking to read something, try The Tao Te Ching. Theres lots of english translations.

The Lord Buddha wasnt a god. He was a prince in India who gave up his palaces and luxury and went out to learn about life and find answers to his questions. It took him years but eventually he reached the state of "nirvana". He then went around teaching others what he had learned. His writings were written down by alot of people and they interpreted them differently for the most part. There are different branches of Buddhism in Tibet, India, China, Japan, and all throughout Asia.
The main pillars of Buddhism are the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. You can look them up at www.wikipedia.com or by googling them.

They don't believe Buddha was a God -- just that he founded the spiritual system. He was the first boddhisatva -- a person who, when they reached enlightenment, chose instead to reincarnate rather than go to Nirvana and join the Universal Consciousness. He did this so that he might lead others to Nirvana and bring them to the 'right' path, but he never claimed to be God. In fact, some believe that Jesus, Mohammad, and Buddha were all incarnations of the same soul.

I know a few good Buddhist websites, but I'm not Buddhist, so I can't answer your question, as it is for Buddhists only. Too bad.
