1.) Regular DVD because you can play it on a DVD.
2.)Yes You can edit it
3.)Sony is the best, but after that you should get whatever sounds good to you, and one that has a longer battery time.

I'd say.... 1st option you go get the hdd - it has all the cool features you wanted from a videocam. 2nd the Dvd - it also have cool features(but disc price is scary); and miniDV - once you get the hang of it, you'll stick with it.
The first two comes bundled with editing/burning softwares that are far better than WMMaker even though you can edit with it. With the miniDV, only some makes and models are bundled with the software.
The best brand i know of is the jvc hdd-everio series. You can choose the model that best fits you without burning your pocket.
Have fun shooting those videos!

I like JVC with the mini-DV tapes.
The quality is actually better than DVD camcorders because DVD camcorders use MPEG2 compression.

I just bought two 6-hour batteries that kick butt! Why two? I dunno, and the first one hasn't died yet and its been 2 weeks with normal usage.

You can EDIT from a DV tape, that has been transfer ed to the PC. I choose the RAW AVI format.

I hear that SONY is one fo the best as far consumer brands, but I have always preferred JVC because they have excellent quality all around including LOW LIGHTING.

If you don't want to edit your movies and just want a DVD, then buy a DVD recorder (It replaces the VCR). You can transfer your videos with that, plus you can record your favorite TV shows with it too.

Whatever camera that you get, make sure that you can buy BIGGER batteries that will fit it.
