Keeping the ends trimmed is a good idea -- not because it makes the hair grow faster, but because it stops the ends splitting and breaking off.
Any good shampoo and moisturizer are an important part of good hair health. The longer the hair, the more time you should spend moisturizing the ends, by the way..the scalp usually provides enough oil for the hair close to it.
Avoid excessive brushing, but you do need to comb/brush enough to ensure there are no tangles or mats developing.

Take the vitamin "Biotin" it works like magic. You won't see results right away but after taking it for a few weeks, you will.... and especially after a month or two.
