The little boy I babysit for is starting to go through the biting phase. He had something in his mouth the other day, so I went to get it and he clamped down on my thumb and finger and wouldn't let go until I yelled "Oww!!" When I told his mom, she asked me if I bit him back. It's her kid, and since we never really addressed the issue, I hadn't. Plus she doesn't spank him. But if he comes up to me now and bites me on the arm or something, I do bite him back right after he does it--not hard, mind you, but he needs to know that it hurts when he does that to someone else. It's the same with pinching. You don't have to go overboard with it, but just enough to let them know if they do that, the consequence will be the same every time. Sooner or later they'll stop.

Yup, I have with both my kids. I didn't do it enough to leave any redness or a mark, and it basically just hurt their feelings. They would get 2 warnings, and if they did it again.. I bit them. It worked. They realized that biting wasn't nice, and that there are consequences to their actions.

BUT I only did it as a deterrent to my boys biting other people.

No. People are not animals, there are other ways to punish your kids besides hurting them.

When I was very little and my dad was carrying me, I bit him on the arm. He bit my arm back to teach me the lesson. I never bit anyone again.

Sounds rather abusive and seriously immature.
