just look and smile should be enough - hell maybe not even the smile is neccessary

Make eye contact with them and flash them a friendly smile. But becareful. Being a solo traveller in an unknown country can be dangerous. Since you're alone, there wont be someone to help you. Just be careful who you smile at and make eye contact with. Many cultures eye contact is considered a forward move if done by a female to a male.

These are not the 70's, 80's or 90's. Men today would LOVE to know you are interested. So many times we may approach a woman who smiles at us, only to be rejected or to be accused of terrible things.
Go ahead and strike up a conversation. Ask us out. Who knows -- he might just be the man of your dreams, and is just too shy or worried to start the first conversation!

Depends exactly what you are interested in, Find one of those things you admire about him and open a dialog. Mention a nice necklace, or ring, computer, etc.... something just open the door by offering an opening to conversation...

well, let's be honest--if you're on holiday, you shouldn't really care about rejection of any sort. you should feel bold! just strike up conversation, who cares? random is never boring!
but like some other responses here, be careful, of course. use common sense. traveling alone you should always be weary.
