It's quite simple really and yet supposed religious people in positions of power seem to think it doesn't apply to them.

Perhaps you think that the correct translation actually is "kill" and not murder. Well let's look at what He said way back before and also during the time that He gave the laws to the Jewish people.
Genesis 9:6 "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image.
Exodus 21:12 "Whoever strikes a man so that he dies shall be put to death. 13 But if he did not lie in wait for him, but God let him fall into his hand, then I will appoint for you a place to which he may flee. 14 But if a man willfully attacks another to kill him by cunning, you shall take him from my altar, that he may die. 15 "Whoever strikes his father or his mother shall be put to death. 16 "Whoever steals a man and sells him, and anyone found in possession of him, shall be put to death.
Here God clearly says that people who willfully commit murder, who attack their parents and who kidnap someone should be put to death by a court of law. So while God tells individuals not to kill one another, He doesn't say that a person shouldn't be put to death for breaking the law.

I thought it might be fun to throw off some folks.
"Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with a man." (Numbers 31:17)
"There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven-- A time to give birth and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted. A time to kill and a time to heal; a time to tear down and a time to build up." (Ecclesiastes 3:1-3)
Remember that the original Hebrew and Aramaic words translate differently into English, and there are many Hebrew words for "kill." Also remember that whatever you read in the Bible must be examined in the proper context. That is to say, don't pick one verse to change your life and discard the rest (we do this a lot). Study the verse in light of the rest of the book.

mudering and killling, not the same
you might as the same about the innocent fetus, who responds to music in the womb, plays and is made in the image of God experienceing pain and pleasure, should you kill and innocent human life out of convenience
what part of thou shalt not kill do you not understand?

1.) Murder and kill are not the same. One to murder is to kill unjustly.
2.)The someone put "life they did not create"; I certainly hope this isn't to defend abortion or child murder (are they the same?). I'll assume she means that since no one created life but God no one has the right to end it...However,
3.)Using things from the bible, it is valid to lay you life down for another. And to treat each other as you would like to be treated. Also, that living by the sword means dying by the sword. So here, a military is allowed to defend people, by laying down their life (use of the sword) for another. That makes them heroes.
Ok, so positions of power. Well, they must defend people from injustice as they would like to be defended. I think thats enough.

Correct. Religious people only use religion when it is convenient for them to do so...like for manipulating others. They kill and then come up with all these reason's about why it was OK and that their god gave them an exception this time. They are playing "god".

The Bible does not teach "Thou shalt not kill". That is a misunderstanding by many.
The Bible teaches "Thou shalt not kill innocent life" (i.e., thou shalt not murder).
In other words, do not kill babies, do not kill innocent children or adults.

Good question. Abortion advocates seem to think there's nothing being killed but a few 'non viable cells'. But by their definition of 'non viable', astronauts are also collections of 'non viable cells' when they are in space. So what's the problem with tossing them out the airlock without a suit?

"thou" and "shalt" are pretty difficult words.
maybe it would work if we just changed it into "not kill !! "
