Because hell is understood to be a literal, physical place. And because many do not realize that there are many different interpretations of what hell is, even within their own religion. And because fear has been, and continues to be, used as a means of control; just take a look at the state of American politics and the mass media. And it provides a situation where people become "victims" who must be "saved," usually by someone other than themselves; if that is not the circumstance for someone claiming power (and being the "hero), I don't know what is. And then it creates a power struggle, because those who are "saved" by said "hero" often feel that they are better off than anyone who is not, and sometimes they then take on the responsibility of saving others.
I find that fear is a rather negative means of trying to produce some sort of positive outcome but it is, apparently, fairly effective.
I don't undertstand the teachings of Christ to be a doctrine of fear, although I have personally experienced Christians who attempt to make it such. I understand His ideas to be a doctrine of compassion, as was the Buddha's several centuries before. And while I have been accused of sacrilege for saying this, I believe that Jesus teachings were to help us to become Christlike (as the Buddha gave us the means to become enlightened), rather than for us to give up our selves (and on ourselves) and make him (and God) responsible for our salvation.

Personally, I don't believe in hell. I believe that hell is a made up place designed to scare people into leading religious lives. I also believe that heaven is a fantasy place that doesn't exist, too. It just doesn't make logical sense, and I consider myself to be a logical person. Also, I don't think a kind and loving god would cast you off into the fires of Hell for making mistakes. If we are his children and he loves us very much, why would he send us to Hell? I know a lot of mothers, and even if their children really messed up, I can't think of one mother who would even consider sending their children to Hell. If god would do that to his children, what kind of a god is he?
I think that Christianity is a facade that people hide behind to absolve them from the responsibility of taking charge of their own lives.
Maybe I'm just too cynical. In my line of work, I see the nasty side of humanity all too often.
On a more positive note: I'll tell you why I'm not afraid of hell. I live in Alabama! I doubt that hell could possibly be any hotter!

Because God is real, His Word is real and the Scriptures that speak of Hell are also real.
Christians are not afraid of going to hell because they know hell is for the unbeliever, not the believer.

I'm not afraid of hell or going there. I just don't want to. Hell is like a spiritual burial place, not a place of torment...so there's nothing really to be afraid of. I don't want to be unconscious, though. When I am taken from this world, I want to be able to see God. It's not that we are afraid. We are just really excited about meeting He who created us and gave us everything we have. We want to live in Heaven with Him. Would you rather spend eternity in Heaven with God, starting from the day you die, or be unconscious until Judgment Day before you even get the chance to see Him or any of the people you loved in your lifetime? We're not afraid...just anxious!

I am not afraid of going to hell. :)
When I was an Atheist, I did not believe in hell, so I was not afraid of it.
After I committed my life to Christ, I know I will not be going to Hell, so I am not afraid of it.
I believe in hell... as a place where people reap the just consequences of the evil they committed on earth, the pain and harm they inflicted on the lives of others (through their actions and through their inaction when they should have acted).
Hell is a consequence of Justice.
Cordially,
John

there's a reason why we are christians..we believe in what the Bible says; it says there's a Heaven and Hell and wherever we go, it'll be for an eternity. Hell is filled with suffering and fire that no one can bare...and it's FOR ETERNITY.
But it's about being with Jesus and God, not running away from Hell.

we are not afraid, hell is not the place for us. God whom we serve lives in heaven and we want to meet him one day. u cannot go to hell and later move to heaven, it is either of the two.
And if u know what hell is really like u will not want to go there
