In this country there are over 5 million, it's one of the most populer breeds and as been for over 100 years, with only 556 deaths in the past 15 years due to dog attacks and those being caused by 56 breeds why do people think that there is danderous pit bulls around every conner. This should prove that most pits are owned by people who take the time to train and keep thier pet pits the right way. If they were as bad as what the news and others make them to be then there would be a death by them everyday and a whole lot more attacks. Over 5 million, you have better odds of getting killed by lighting or attacked by a shark than by a pit bull. I las Vegas there as been no deaths caused by pits for over 20 years and only 5 bad attacks. We have a huge dog fighting problem in N. Las Vegas would you not think our numbers would be higher. These numbers include las vegas, N Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, Nellis air forice base, Puramp, and Mopa

Media hype and knee-jerk reactions by people (including politicians) who don't understand the problem at all.

Discrimination and banning breeds is not the answer. Ask your local lawmakers to pass laws to prosecute the owners of any dog that is allowed to run loose. If someone has a vicious dog of any pure or mixed breed and it menaces or bites someone, that owner should be punished the same way as if he left a loaded gun lying around and a child shot himself with it - make it a major felony!

Physically, almost any dog is capable of killing a child. Even a Golden retriever accidentally killed a child this past winter - the child was sent out to play wearing a scarf. Tragically, the dog thought this was for him to play tug-of-war with and the child died of strangulation.

The pit bull, in general, is unpredictable as are several other breeds. The pit bull, however, has incredible jaw strength and most cannot be deterred from or during an attack.
German shepards are very territorial and occasionally unpredictable, but do not cause the mutilation that a pit bull can cause and the shepard can be controlled more so than the pit bull.

If I had a pit bull or any other I was told to get rid of, it would break my heart. I am a dog lover, but knowing what we know about the pit bull, I wouldn't dream of owning one.

You did not stay dishearten for long did you. There is an extravagant amount of bad information out there about Pits and Rotties. Did you know that the American Temperament Test Society rates their temperaments at above average and at about the same level as Golden Retrievers?? Here’s how they stack up along with some other popular breeds:

Average Rating of all Breeds in this study: 81.0%
Cardigan Welsh Corgi 76.8%
Shih Tzu 76.9%
Old English Sheepdog 77.8%
Beagle 78.2%
Cocker Spaniel 81.5%
Rottweiler 82.3%
Golden Retriever 83.2%
American Pit Bull Terrier 83.4%
Mixed Breed 85.1%

In the ATT test, a dog is put through a series of confrontational situations. Any sign of panic or aggression leads to failure of the test. The achievement of pit bulls and Rottweilers in this study disproves once and for all the old tired belief that they are inherently aggressive to people.

This Government site was posted 10 years ago, but was the only authorative site I've found so far>>

The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Humane Society of the United States recently updated data on fatal dog bites for the period 1989 to 1994.

In the 6-year study published in the medical journal PEDIATRICS (Vol.97 No. 6, 891-5), Jeffrey J. Sacks, M.D. and associates reported the finding of 109 bite-related fatalities. They found that 57% of the deaths were in children under 10 years of age. 22% of the deaths involved an unrestrained dog OFF the owner's property. 18% of the deaths involved a restrained dog ON the owner's property, and 59% of the deaths involved an unrestrained dog ON the owner's property.

The researchers also found that 10% of the dog bite attacks involved sleeping infants.

The most commonly reported dog breeds involved were pit bulls (24 deaths), followed by rottweilers (16 deaths), and German shepherds (10 deaths). The authors point out that many breeds, however, are involved in the problem.
Source(s):
Here are stats from another gov health site>>
The most common victims of dog bites are children, especially in incidents that prove fatal. Almost one half of all reported cases of dog bites involve an animal owned by the victim's family or the victim's neighbors. Most victims are involved in normal, nonprovoking activities before the dog attacks. For example, neonatal deaths resulting from a dog bite most often involve a sleeping baby.

Several dog breeds have been identified for their role in fatal dog bite attacks, including pit bull breeds, malamutes, chows, Rottweilers, huskies, German shepherds and wolf hybrids. From 1979 to 1988, pit bull breeds accounted for more than 41 percent of dog biterelated fatalities, three times as many as German shepherds.
THIS ONE FROM THE CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL 2002.
At least 25 breeds of dogs have been involved in 238
human DBRF during the past 20 years. Pit bull-type
dogs and Rottweilers were involved in more than half of
these deaths.

Part of the reason pit bull attacks are so dangerous is that if pit bulls do bite, they are bred not to let go, so more damage is done. However, irresponsible breeders and irresponsible owners are the reason that these dogs have such a bad rep. For an interesting perspective on the issue of pit bulls, check out this article:

The media makes a huge deal out of dog attacks and pitt bulls became very popular very quickly and many people who owned them are irresponsible and how they brought up and treated and trained thier dogs got the breed a bad name. Once pople have seen something bad it is harder to forget.
I work with many breeds of aggressive or assertive dogs. I love pitt bulls and think they make wonderful pets for the right owner one who is willing to take time and train them to be a great dog.

Because the breed is also popular to drug dealers (who keep them mean on purpose) and the sick groups that insist on fighting dogs against each other. These dogs are the menace and because of them the rest have to pay the penelty.

Pit bulls weren't naturally aggressive until they were bread to be. Soon, natural selection kicked in, and most pit bulls that are alive today are aggressive.

People see what they want to see. For them, its probably logical that the cruelty is making money. Sad huh. Why don't you set up a petition against them and send it to your Governor to do something about it. Small steps lead to great things. If you strongly believe in something, you can achieve it. Make a change.
