Can someome explain the purpose of both and the differences?

NATO or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is was created to protect Europe against a possible invasion of Europe by the USSR, Russia before the Cold War ended.
The United Nations was created in the aftermath of World War II to hopefully maintain peace by giving a voice to all the Nations of the World. There is lots of Controversy about the UN, but it has helped the world keep from starting a Nuclear War. The UN has also been very important in responding to Natural Disasters and Regional Wars. After all, Europe did get through the cold war without one nuke going off.
The neocon's or New Republicans probably will disagree, but they have taken the side of Israel in the Arab/Jewish Wars and crisis. The UN passed a number of resolutions condemning Israel for its reactions it took against the Palestinians, but when there is a new war going Israel loves to just talk about the resolutions they agree with that are passed by the United Nations. But the neocon's are completely tone deaf when it comes to dealing with the Palestinians or any other Arab or Persian people.

The United Nations was formed after WW 2 because the world was sick unto death of Wars. The United States, never the less, was waltzed into Korea - at the end of a leash that led back to our real handlers, the so called 'Military-Industry Complex. An immensely powerful syndicate. A bit later, when Eisenhower was elected, he - a retired General of Generals - also was utterly sickened by what he saw and lived through in the European Theater during WW 2. So, he too was amenable to the United Nations. And too was Kennedy. And further - Kennedy kind of figuratively 'poked a stick into the eye' of this.. syndicate. He initiated the Peace Corps!! The exact antithesis of the Warmongering syndicate! Well ! They certainly put an end to that - and after Kennedy we were led, with no resistance, into Vietnam. The rest is history. The UN was ignored by us and the old, useless 'NATO' was revived and here we are today.. War is OUR business! And, it is an LLC. A very 'limited liability corporation!!

NATO because it is run by the military but the UN is run by civilians
