ok well since someone requested it: Well this is the story i was told in texas) there was once a lady whos husband left her and drowned her children as a result of her insanity. Now she lingers around to find her "missing" kids.
Then again there are millions of versions of the story.

Well, I remember my 'abuelita' telling me the story of La Lorona.
It scared me to death! I think it did originate in Mexico, and its a very sad story. There are different versions of it, depending on where you live. Since I live here on the Rio Grande, the legend was that she drowned her children there.
Here is a link to her story:

According to wikipedia it was either or both.
Typically, the legend serves as a cautionary tale on several levels. Hispanic parents will warn their children that both bad behavior and being outside after dark will be rewarded with a visit from the spirit. The tale also warned teenage girls not to be enticed by status, wealth, or material goods. Some also believe that those who hear the screams of La Llorona are marked for death.

Yeah! If you believe in crying old ladies that steal children on dark nights! I believe it is a Mexican folk song.
Fab story and song. Gives me chivers up and down my spine when I hear it sung well!
Tell your fans the story in additional comments, it's only fair!
