Its easy, but I would suggest you start really small, and work your way up, if youre going to cut your own hair. I cut my own hair all the time, but I had an accident a few years ago, and gave myself a pixie cut, lol. It was really late, so I wouldnt suggest doing any haircut when its late or youre tired.
Leave it dry, for one thing. Brush it out really well, and use barber shears. Part it in the middle first.
There are also special thinning shears you can buy, and they help alot too.
Just use a fine toothed comb, and part the hair that you DONT want to trim. Tie that back into a bun.
The rest of the hair should be even on both sides. Not too much to start out. Maybe an inch worth on either side. (an inch away from the face, I mean. Dont go too much further than that.)

Next, start out with small "slices" of hair, like a thin, short section at a time, and trim those at a steep angle with the scissors. The top part of the cut should be where the shortest hair you want framing your face will be. Start out at the shortest hair being at about mid-nose length. Try to be even on both sides. As you cut, just hold onto the hair, after, and take a dab of water and plaster it to your cheeks. That way you know youre being even.
Keep moving downwards, with thin, short "slices" of hair, and cut them gradually longer. If you have shoulder length hair, then do about 8 different lengths in the front, none any lower than just below your chin. If its longer than that, you should do less, and allow one "wisp" that falls just below the chin, also, maybe even another one, just a hint lower.
If your hair is already just to maybe your chin length, then you have many choices, keep it simple with a few on each side, or do like 15 cuts on each side, to add volume and finess.

I hope this helps! I do it all the time with my own hair, and always get compliments, but like I said, it sometimes takes a little practice, so dont go crazy with it.. lol

its better to get a pro to cut it for you, but thats not what your looking for! The best way to get side bangs are if:

1) first cut yyour bangs to your eyebrow

2) then make the part in your hair go right down the middle (this might take some getting used to but its the big part to side bangs)

3) just sweep your bangs to the side. your hair will look beautiful! Hope i helped!

ask a hair stylist to do it or just go for it (thats what i did and it didn't look half bad). . . just make sure to cut it longer than you want it because you can always cut more off later
