Listen a guy with good family values is hard to come by this day and age if he is being honest and his grandma is really sick you should be supportive of him and don't jump down his throat about it just let him know it is ok and to give you a call if he needs to talk about it or let you know when he is able to go out.
On another note if you find out he is lying about it don't worry you are better off with out him than being with a jerk that would use such a horrible thing as an excuse.
